TheINNERSPACE Mural is a 6' 8" X 40' mural designed by the artist, which
combined acrylic paint with woodcarving. This mural was exhibited in Daytona, Sarasota,
Tallahassee, and Pensacola in 1972 where it was loaned to the Pensacola Art Center where
it was placed on display for an extended length of time. '
INNERSPACE' served as the prototype for later works by Roland Hockett. Works such as the
'LIBERTY' mural and a whole host of other works including the 'Passage to Peace'
collection which toured Costa Rica in 1988 were patterned after the 'Innerspace' mural.
After this initial work other themes and additional color was added to the artist's
approach. It served as the beginning of a major direction for the artist, which
evolved again to another stage in later works when metal was combined into the mix. It
also represents a solution for fabricating a large mural structure, which could be broken
down into modular forms to allow for crating and shipping. This design and safe movement
of the 'LIBERTY' mural to Costa Rica in 1987, as well as other projects, owe part of their
success to this earlier effort.
'Innerspace' depicts the images of people mixed with a feeling of movement through space
and the interworkings of man. Many forms are derived from anatomical beginnings, but
depicted expressively and abstractly to relate to the concept of people existing in Space.
In the most basic sense it depicts movements through space mixed with multiple images of
people and it uses the unique combination of acrylic and carving.
The 'INNERSPACE' mural at present is in storage, but is available and may
be considered for purchase.
